8/29/11 - 9/2/11

Important Reminders: There is no school on Monday, 9/5, due to the Labor Day Holiday. Also, there is no school for students on Tuesday, 9/6 because it is a Teacher Training Day.

Spirit Wear Days are scheduled for the first Friday of each month. On Spirit Days, students are encouraged to wear their May Watts clothing or wear blue and grey to show their school spirit!

Citizenship- This week, we learn how to respect YOE (Yourself, Others, and the Environment) in different school settings such as in the bathroom, hallways, and playground. Each week, the class will set a goal to try to earn gold tickets by demonstrating good citizenship skills throughout the building. When the class meets their goal, they earn a celebration at the end of the week! The students can also earn individual blue paw prints which can be redeemed for different rewards.

Spelling- Simply click on the Spelling Tab above for your child's list. The skill for List 1 is short a and short e words. The test will be on Friday, 9/2.

Reading- This week, we will be reading the story, Pepita Talks Twice by Ofelia Dumas Lachtman. This is a realistic fiction story about a girl named Pepita, who stops speaking Spanish because she is tired of being the neighbohood translator. When her dog does not respond to the English name she gives him, a disaster nearly occurs. Please have your child reread the story at home because there will be an open book assessment at the end of the week. The students will also be assessed on the strategy of identifying Narrative Elements including the characters, setting, plot (events including the problem, and solution.)

Writing- We are launching our Writer's Workshop by working on the First Twenty Days of Writing. We will discuss what Writer's Workshop looks like and gather materials. The students will also brainstorm topics for use during the year. In addition, we will share the format of what to do with writing pieces.

Grammar Skill- The students will review common and proper nouns.

Grade 3 Math- The students will begin Unit 1 by learning how to use their SRB (Student Reference Book) as a study tool. We will also review the skills of telling time and using rulers to measure objects in inches and centimeters. The children will learn how to compile data into the form of a graph. Please encourage your child to complete their Home Link every night and to use the SRB to reinforce their skills at home.
Later in Unit 1, the students will find equivalent names for numbers. We will talk about the language of chance and what is likely or not likely to happen (or sure and not sure). We will also talk about what finding the difference means (subtracting the amount between two numbers) and finish with calculator routines.
By the end of Unit 1, the students should be able to:
- Identify and use number patterns to solve problems
- Count by 10"s and 100's
- Apply place value concepts in 4 digit numbers,
- Tell and show time to the nearest minute
- Count combinations of bills and coins and write the total in dollars and cents notation
- Find equivalent names for numbers

Accelerated Math-  Unit 1 focuses on naming and constructing geometric figures. We will practice using geometric tools, learn how to classify quadrangles and will explore and identify polygons. In addition, we will explore the SRB (student reference book) and review and practice addition and subtraction facts.

Social Studies- During our Communities Unit, the students will learn about urban, rural, and suburban communities in the United States and the world. We will explore the official site of Naperville to learn what our community has to offer. The children will create brochures on the community of Naperville. We will also compare and contrast various communities. Check out the Social Studies Communities Link on the right side of the blog for some puzzles and games.
For further review of vocabulary and ideas, review our Communities Book, Chapter 1, pages 1-34 and Chapter 2, pages 36-64 as a reference.
